WILLIMANTIC-- A murder suspect facing charges in Puerto Rico was arrested in Connecticut Monday evening.

SWAT assisted in the arrest, which occurred at the Boston Post Road Mobil station.

The suspect, Kevin Nievez-Caban, 20, is wanted for murder in Puerto Rico, and is being held on a $5 million bond for being a fugitive from justice. He is due in court on Tuesday, and will likely eventually be extradited back to Puerto Rico.

A tip led officers to Nievez-Caban, who was then surveilled by SWAT before his arrest around 6:30 p.m.

"We picked a strategic location where we didn’t have many people around, where he was not going to be mobile on us, and we were able to take him into custody by SWAT team personnel without incident," said Cpl. Stan Parizo.

No one was injured.

“This is a prime example of how the public is in partnership with the police department here in Willimantic. This man has been wanted in Puerto Rico on murder charges since his warrant was signed there back on December 17, 2014," Sgt. Alex Coriaty said.

Police initially would not say what the incident was related to as they waited to confirm the suspect's identity. At first, police said a person had been taken into custody as a person of interest.
