HARTFORD— The owner of a West Hartford hookah lounge pleaded no contest to second-degree assault in connection to charges that he and his wife attacked each other with an ornamental sword.

The Hartford Courant reports a judge sentenced 47-year-old George Ayoub to a five-year suspended prison sentence and a three-year conditional discharge as part of a plea agreement Monday.

Police say Ayoub was found bleeding inside 1001 Arabian Nights Hookah Lounge in April and his wife, 24-year-old Najeh Frihi, was found down the block with wounds to her shoulders and hands. A large sword was found at the scene.

Authorities say Ayoub suffered massive lacerations to his abdomen. His lawyer says that “he nearly died.”

The case against Frihi is expected to be resolved on Aug. 10.
