WEST HAVEN--It didn't get a clean bill of health, but the VA Hospital in West Haven is apparently on the road to recovery.

The newly-appointed undersecretary for Health at the Veterans Health Administration, Dr. David Shulkin, joined Sen. Richard Blumenthal on a tour of the hospital on Friday.

They examined where a new psychiatric emergency room is going. A new women's clinic is also expected to open in early fall.

However, there is still a lot of work to be done to reconfigure and modernize the hospital.

"I was able to put on the surgical gowns, go through the operating rooms, it's too small," Dr. Shulkin said.  "You can't get the modern equipment in some of these rooms which is preventing us from serving the veterans in the way we want to do that."

Sen. Blumenthal, who is the ranking member of the Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs, said one day the entire hospital will need to be rebuilt, but until then, veterans deserve serious renovations.
