Hartford crash puts motorcycle driver in ICU

HARTFORD – Sunday at around 2:1 5 p.m., Hartford police responded to the area of Hillside Avenue at Bonner Street on 911 calls of a serious accident involving a car and a motorcycle.

The motorcycle driver, Jamil Gomez Matos, 27, of Brooklyn, NY was not wearing a helmet. He was thrown a significant distance from the area of impact. The driver of the car, William Santiago-Melendez, 25, of Hartford, sustained minor injuries.

Both were taken to Hartford Hospital, where Matos is in critical condition in the ICU.

The scene was secured and witnesses were located while reconstructionists investigated the crash.

Preliminary witness information indicates the motorcycle, a 2013 Yamaha, was doing a wheely heading southbound on Hillside Ave.

The car, a 2001 Nissan Altima, was heading northbound on Hillside Ave and starting turning left onto Bonner Street when accident happened.

The investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed yet.
