SIMSBURY -- The Simsbury Police Department hosted its Junior Police Academy last week. Attendees were able to learn about the Simsbury Police Department and the officers that serve the community.
That includes Project Lifesaver, motor vehicle stops, medical calls, suspicious persons, domestic violence, and other scenarios. The class are taught by Simsbury officers with help from the town’s fire department, Bloomfield’s Police Department, and the Connecticut State Police.
There is no cost to the kids who attend, who are fifth to eighth grade students. Wednesday was all about team building with kids participating in a ropes course at Simsbury Farms.
Tuesday, kids went to the Weatogue Fire House to learn how police officers and firefighters work together.
Officers say the participants come away with a better knowledge of what goes on behind the scenes.
“They only get to see us driving by, back and forth, with sirens and wondering what’s going on,” said Patrolman First Class Todd Kushman with the Simsbury Police Department, “This gives them that opportunity to see that inside part, what really happens, what are we actually talking about, what do we have to go through.”
This is the 14th year the department has hosted the academy.
