HARTFORD — Are students getting too much homework?

If you ask them, they’ll surely say yes; but a new national study shows education leaders actually agree.

The study published Wednesday in the American Journal of Family Therapy says students in the early elementary school years are getting significantly more homework than is recommended by the National Education Association.

In some cases, it’s three times more.

The standard is called the 10 minute rule, meaning 10 minutes per grade level per night– so a first grader would get 10 minutes of homework.

But parents reported that first graders were actually spending 28 minutes on homework.

Kids in kindergarten are spending 25 minutes on after-school assignments, even though officials don’t endorse any homework for children that young.

1,100 parents across the country were polled for this study by Brown University, Brandeis University, Rhode Island College, Dean College, the Children’s National Medial Center and the New England Center for Pediatric Psychology.
