HARTFORD – Bow hunting for deer will be allowed on private lands for all but North Central Connecticut on Sundays starting October 1.
The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said bow hunting will be allowed on Sundays in most deer management zones in the state – except for those in north central Connecticut. The new law allows hunting on private land with the owner’s permission.
A law passed in the General Session authorized Sunday hunting, but was too late to make it into the 2016 Connecticut Hunting and Trapping Guide, as that guide was produced before the new law was approved.
The fall archery deer season runs from September 15 through December 31 for much of the state. It lasts until January 31, 2016 for the deer management zones along Long Island Sound.
“Regulated deer hunting has proven to be an ecologically sound, socially beneficial, and fiscally responsible method of managing deer populations,” said Rick Jacobson, DEEP Wildlife Division Director.
“Sunday hunting is expected to increase – by a small percentage – the current annual harvest of about 10,000-13,000 deer for all hunting seasons,” added Jacobson.
All deer harvested must be reported through DEEP’s online harvest or telephone reporting system (1-877-337-4868).
