HARTFORD–On Monday, a group of young women met with Sen. Richard Blumenthal to discuss the upcoming redesign of the $10 bill.
In June, U.S. Treasury Secretary Jacob J. Lew announced that the $10 bill would be redesigned, and the new bill would feature a woman staring in 2020–the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote.
Throughout history, the department has rarely taken input from the public on the design of currency, but this time the Treasury Department has launched a campaign to get feedback.
On Monday, a group of Connecticut Girl Scouts brought their ideas and research to the table.
Blumenthal started the roundtable by telling the girls that Harriet Tubman and Eleanor Roosevelt have been popular options bandied about so far, and one of the girls did propose Mrs. Roosevelt. But there were some original ideas as well.
One popular idea at the table was Juliette Gordon Low, which was apropos because she founded the Girl Scouts in the United States in 1913.
Another proposal was for Abigail Adams, the second first lady of the United States, and one of the “founding mothers” of the U.S.
A third suggestion was for Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to get a degree in medicine from a university.
