WILLIMANTIC -- SWAT team members and Willimantic Police are investigating on Gem Drive in Willimantic.

Police said a stand off with an armed robber is now over because the suspect escaped the scene and is somewhere outside of Willimantic.

Police said around 9 p.m. Sunday night, a man robbed two women at gun point. Police believed that suspect went inside a home in Willimantic and barricaded himself inside. Officers set a perimeter around the home and they made contact with him on a cellphone.

Police said the suspect is no longer in the house, and he is not in custody. They say he is outside of the town, but they did not release any details on how he escaped.

It all started around 9:30 p.m. Sunday. Two women were robbed at gunpoint and the suspect ran into that home on Gem Drive. The women are working with police. Officers say they believe the suspect is known to them.

Early Monday morning, police told residents to stay in their homes. But around 6 a.m., they were told they could go about their day as normal.

Loud noises were heard on the scene through out the early morning hours.

Fox CT is on the scene and is gathering additional information as the story develops. This story will be updated with the new details.
