BRIDGEPORT — An 86-year-old man convicted of sexually assaulting a Bridgeport girl has been spared prison time, but was barred from Cape Verde, the African country where he was from.

The Connecticut Post reports that Joseph Livramento was sentenced Friday to a five-year suspended sentence and three years’ probation. Superior Court Judge Robert Devlin cited his age and ill health.

Livramento was charged with sexual assault in the first degree with the use of threat or force; sexual assault in the fourth degree of a victim under 15 years old; and two counts of illegal sexual contact with a victim, according to the Connecticut judicial website. He pleaded guilty to the fourth-degree sexual assault of a victim under the age of 15 before Friday’s sentencing.

In a statement to Devlin, the victim and her mother asked that he prevent Livramento from returning to Cape Verde off the coast of Africa, where the family now lives.

His lawyer argued that Cape Verde can accommodate Livramento and the girl. The judge ordered Livramento to stay away from Cape Verde during his probation.

The girl, who was assaulted at age 7 in 2005, is now 14. Verde had been visiting the family in Bridgeport when he assaulted her, and then fled the country, according to the Post. He returned and was arrested on September 5.

The victim said she is disgusted Livramento was not jailed.
