WATERBURY--Union workers at the Allegheny Technologies Inc. plant in Waterbury held a protest on Tuesday after being locked out of the factory.

We previously reported that the company would be locking out workers at plants in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Ohio, Oregon, New York and Pennsylvania, where the company is headquartered, starting August 15.

The move was made due to a contract dispute that impacted 2,000 workers at the company.

In Connecticut, ATI has locations in Waterbury, East Hartford, Windsor and South Windsor.

Dozens turned out to the Railroad Hill Street location on Tuesday to protest the company's recent decision.

The company has dropped a previous effort to eliminate the 8-hour workday and 40-hour workweek and other changes to overtime rules, but the union has continued to balk at having workers pay a share of their health insurance premiums.

ATI says it will keep the plants open with “salaried and non-union employees and temporary professional staffing.”
