HARTFORD — The head of Connecticut’s Department of Motor Vehicles says progress is being made to tackle a customer backlog and long lines after a major computer upgrade was completed several weeks ago.
Commissioner Andres Ayala Jr. warned Friday that people might experience lengthy waits Tuesday after the Labor Day holiday weekend. DMV workers at branch offices don’t work Mondays, so they worked a half-day Friday and won’t be working Saturday to have time off for the holiday.
Ayala said DMV workers usually face longer lines after holidays.
He said people are still visiting branches despite more registration-related services that are available online.
Most services at DMV branches were shut in August for a week as the agency upgraded its system.
The DMV is urging customers to take advantage of AAA branches and online services.
Those needing a duplicate or renewal or a license or ID card can visit a AAA office.
Online DMV services include:
- Improved online registration renewal program.
- Online checks for items, such as unpaid property taxes, lack of insurance, delinquent parking violations, which can hold up a registration renewal and cause repeat trips to DMV.
- Reprints of registration certificates from home or other computers.
- Registration cancelations online.
- Online ordering of special plates, such as vanity plates.
- Online ordering of replacements for damaged plates.
- Electronic notification by providing customers with an option for DMV to contact them either by mail or e-mail.
