HARTFORD — Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is gathering public comment about a new effort help reduce high electricity bills that many New England consumers pay each winter.

The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is accepting comment until Sept. 30 on its plan to secure long-term deals for a range of energy resources, including natural gas, large-scale hydropower and energy storage.

Connecticut lawmakers passed legislation allowing the DEEP commissioner to work with other New England states to obtain the best long-term deals and hire consultants to help evaluate the proposals.

At a recent meeting of New England governors and Canadian premiers, Gov. Dan Malloy said the lack of natural gas pipeline capacity during cold weather has cost New Englanders billions because power is purchased on the spot market.
