NEW BRITAIN -- Schools across the state are planning early dismissals this week, as the first days of September feel more like mid-July with high heat and humidity.
- New Britain Public Schools will close early Tuesday and Wednesday. New Britain High School, Satelitte Careers Academy, and HALS Academy will dismiss at noon on Sept. 8 and Sept. 9, while the DiLoreto School and the middle schools will close at 12:35 p.m. and the elementary schools will close at 1:20 p.m.
- Middletown announced that on Tuesday middle schoolers will be dismissed at 12:15 p.m., and elementary school students will be released at 1 p.m. The high school is air-conditioned and will keep its regular schedule. No decision has been made about Wednesday.
- Madison elementary schools will dismiss at 1 p.m. on Tuesday.
- The Asian Studies Academy at Belizzi in Hartford will also dismiss students early, which it did last week as well.
- Windham Public Schools will release students from all schools besides Barrows STEM academy (which has air conditioning) two hours early on Tuesday. All afternoon activities are canceled.
- Shelton elementary schools will dismiss at 1 p.m. on Tuesday.
- Southington is releasing all elementary school students early based on the district's early dismissal schedule.
- Danbury Public Schools will close early on Tuesday.
- Norwalk Public Schools will dismiss students from the following schools two hours early on Tuesday: Wolfpit, Tracey, Silvermine, Rowayton, Kendall, Naramake, Cranbury, West Rocks, Roton, Ponus and Nathan Hale.
- Also, Middlesex Community College are canceled classes in Snow and Wheaton halls for Tuesday due to an air-conditioning malfunction. All other classes will be held.
In a letter sent home to parents on September 4, Middletown Superintendent Patricia Charles said that there was an increase in headaches, stomach aches and asthma-related issues at the end of last week, when the temperatures first climbed into the upper 80s and 90s. Madison Public Schools reported health issues as well, and Fox CT has gotten messages from parents at some of the other schools on the list stating similar cases.
