STORRS — The private fundraising arm of the University of Connecticut says it will be seeking more money from the parents of UConn students and patients of the UConn Health Center as it tries to increase private donations to the school.

UConn Foundation President Joshua Newton says those groups have been identified as underutilized resources the school can tap into as it looks for ways to offset state budget cuts with more philanthropic giving.

He says the UConn Foundation raised about $78 million in private donations last fiscal year, but only about $2.1 million of that came from parents.

New York University philanthropy professor Claire Gaudiani says parents and patients represent people who are grateful to the school, either for the education for their child or the health care it provided.
