BRIDGEPORT -- Police are continuing to investigate the disappearance of an Easton couple, the day after their son was arrested on federal firearms charges.
The U.S. Attorney's Office says Kyle Navin, 27, was arrested Tuesday. Kyle appear in Bridgeport Federal Court Tuesday afternoon for one charge of possession of a firearm by an individual who is an unlawful user of/addicted to a controlled substance.
His parents, Jeffrey and Jeanette Navin were reported missing August 7 by their sister-in-law. The affidavit for Kyle's arrest says that Jeffrey didn't show up for work on August 6 and 7, which his brother, who works with him, said was very unusual and that Jeffrey always made prior arrangements to cover his shift. Both of their phones were also turned off.
In a series of text messages released by investigators Tuesday, Jeffrey Navin accused his son Kyle of framing him for murder.
- Jeffrey to Kyle (12:43 p.m.): Did you hurt mom?
- Kyle to Jeffrey (12:43 p.m.): No absolutely not. Why would you think
- Jeffrey to Kyle (12:44 p.m.): I go home and get framed for murder
- Kyle to Jeffrey (12:45 p.m.): Oh stop
- Jeffrey to Kyle (12:48 p.m.): I'm going to the police first
Investigators searching Kyle's home seized numerous bags with heroin residue, hypodermic needles, empty prescription bottles for oxycodone and prescription bottles containing other controlled substances and a receipt from a firearms shooting range that was issued on August 5. Navin’s cellphone and had numerous text messages, officials said, that discussed his use of heroin, oxycodone and Xanax.
Kyle Navin was first interviewed by police about his parents’ disappearance on August 7. According to his warrant, he told Easton police that he last saw them on August 4 when they came to visit him at his Bridgeport home.
Navin’s story changed when he was re-interviewed by Easton Police, and again in a recorded interview with Connecticut State Police. He told investigators that he saw both of his parents in Westport on August 4.
Twice, Navin told investigators that he met one or both of his parents at the park-and-ride off the Merritt Parkway in Westport. That is the same location where police found his parent’s pick-up truck days later with a busted out window and “suspected physiological fluid.”
Investigators also interviewed Navin’s girlfriend after she was captured on a security camera driving towards Jeffrey and Jeanette’s Easton home while closely following someone driving Jeffrey’s truck. When police interviewed her, she initially lied and claimed she was home in Bridgeport all day. She later told police that Kyle “asked her to follow him to his parent’s house in Easton.”
The weapons charge Kyle is being held on carries a maximum sentence of 10 years.
He will appear in court again on Friday to determine if he will remain behind bars while the case is pending.
Jeffrey Navin is president of J&J Refuse in Westport and Jeannette Navin is a school library aide in Weston. State police have searched area landfills for the couple but have found no signs of human remains. Kyle is listed as operations manager at J&J Refuse.
The State Police Major Crimes Division also searched Navin's home on Aldine Avenue in Bridgeport on August 20 in connection to his missing parents.
Neighbors at that time said they hadn’t seen Kyle, his girlfriend or their two dogs for over a week. The garbage truck Kyle Navin usually parked at the house was also gone.
