MIDDLEFIELD-- Lyman Orchards is a place made famous for picking apples and putting golf balls, but each fall visitors are told to just get lost.
No, they're not pushing away business--they're sending them in a maze!
This is the 16th autumn in a row that the 11,000-acre farm has opened a corn maze, and each year it has a different theme.
"Believe it or not we started back in 2000," said John Lyman, the eighth-generation owner of the orchard that bears his name. "We've had some really fun (maze) designs," Lyman said.
Over the years we've seen a four-acre tribute to the Beatles, a UConn Huskies maze, and this year--a giant sized Pez head.
"The iconic Pez boy is our design," Lyman said. "Pez is a Connecticut company so we're partnering with another Connecticut company and it's alot of fun."
The Lyman staffers said those who "choose wisely" can escape the maze in just under a half an hour, but if they continue to hit dead ends, there are "corn cops" throughout the walkways stationed to help expedite the guests safe exit. "They are the navigators," Lyman said.
Aside from the corn maze, Lyman's fairways are still in full swing in fall. Right now the fruits that are ripe for picking are apples, peaches, pears, Asian pears, and, in the next few days, pumpkin season starts.
"This time of year, weather wise, it's just gorgeous, bright sun and nice cool days," Lyman said.
The property now also boasts 45 holes of golf.
Lyman Orchards is open seven days a week, the new Pez corn maze costs $10 for adults, $5 for kids 4-12, kids under 4 go free. For more information click here.
