NEW LONDON–Chloe the kitty is being well taken care of after she was injured by some neighborhood kids.

On Friday, Fox CT reported that the 4-month-old female cat had been found by New London Animal Control with a broken front leg. The Animal Control office reported on its Facebook page that some neighborhood children had attacked and hurt her.

At the time, the office asked for donations to help give Chloe the best care possible. If not enough money was raised, she may have needed to be euthanized or have needed to have her leg amputated.

But people around the country, from Washington, to Texas, to Ohio, to Arizona and other states mailed in checks to the VCA-New London Animal Hospital to help pay for Chloe’s care, meaning should could afford to have the best option for care: surgery to repair her leg.

Also, because more money was raised than is needed to care for Chloe, the remaining funds will be kept to care for the next injured animal.

Meanwhile, Animal Control has had a “disheartening” time investigating who hurt Chloe. According to an update on the department’s Facebook page, officers spoke to many neighborhood children, and their parents, from the area in which Chloe was found. Each child told officers that another child hit or kicked the kitten, and each passed off the blame to the next, making it impossible to determine who hurt Chloe.

Not one kid admitted to hurting the kitten, and some of the parents simply said she is “just a cat,” and they couldn’t understand why finding the culprits was such a big deal.

“At this time, there is absolutely no way to prove which child actually injured her,” the Animal Control officers wrote. “There is simply not enough evidence to attempt to prosecute any of these kids. And no, it is not an option to “arrest”’ them all. Anyone with a familiarity of the legal system knows that is not feasible, or, in fact, allowable.”

Chloe will need more care before she can be adopted, but several people have expressed interest in giving her a forever-home.

You can still donate to the Animal Control’s account at the vet hospital to help care for injured animals. If you’d like to donate, please send a check to the hospital, which is located at 122 Cross Rd. in Waterford. Write “Chloe’s Fund-New London ACO” on the memo line. There is no GoFundMe account because that website takes a portion of the funds.

As for Chloe, she had her splint changed, and will have surgery to have her leg pinned on Tuesday. Good luck Chloe!
