GREENWICH — A police officer was awarded “Officer of the Month” after saving an 81-year-old swimmer in distress.

Officer Sean J. Welsh was off duty at Todd’s Point Beach with his family on August 9th.  Welsh saw a woman start to pull a swimmer out of the water and ran over to provide assistance.

After Welsh pulled the swimmer out of the water, he noticed that she had no pulse and was not breathing. Welsh administered CPR in assistance of on-duty lifeguards. EMTs then transported the woman to Stamford Hospital where she began breathing on her own.

For his efforts, the Greenwich Police Department named  Welsh “Officer of the Month” for August.

“The highest calling of a police officer is to preserve life.  Officer Welsh lived up to adage often espoused by those of us in Law Enforcement; Honor is never off duty,”  said Chief James Heavey.
