BRIDGEPORT–Police have made an arrest in a homicide from earlier this year.

On Wednesday evening, around 5:30 p.m., Bridgeport Police tried to pull over a Toyota Corolla on Park Avenue, near the intersection with Benham Avenue after the car ran a stop sign. The driver pulled over for a moment, and then sped off.

Police chased the car southbound on Park Avenue, then east on Harral Avenue, then south on Coleman Street. As the car approached the Coleman Street-Washington Avenue intersection, it swerved right and hit a parked, unoccupied car.

The Corolla then crossed over Washington Avenue and went onto the Route 8-25 connector in the southbound direction, where it continued to drive in the right shoulder. The car then swerved to the extreme left side of the road, cutting off drivers trying to enter the on-ramp for I-95 northbound.

When the driver approached the entrance to I-95 north, he slammed on the brakes in an apparent attempt to make the police car hit his car, which it did. Both the Corolla and police cruiser then hit center concrete barrier head-on.

Other officers involved in the chase took the driver, Cewell Sharpe, 32, of Bridgeport, into custody. His front seat passenger was released without charges.

The officer who was driving the car that smashed into the barrier was taken to the hospital with injuries.

Sharpe was charged with operating with a suspended license, reckless driving, engaging in pursuit, failure to obey a stop sign and violating conditions of a release. He was out on bond for two arrests that were made on May 7, for which he was charged with larceny, interfering with police, possession of narcotics and possession of narcotics with intent to sell.

Also, Sharpe is considered a possible suspect in an open homicide case. He was also out on bond
