East Hartford assault

EAST HARTFORD — Police have charged a teen who is suspected in two sexual assaults as an adult.

Jaishon Bellamy, 16, has been charged with several felonies in two separate assaults that occurred in East Hartford in September.

The first assault occurred on September 3 at a commuter lot off Route 15 exit 90, near 500 Main St. in East Hartford. Around 2:30 a.m. the victim’s car was stolen. Police found it on Mckee Street in East Hartford after getting into a single-vehicle crash. The suspect ran away.

The second assault happened during a home invasion on September 19. Around 6:30 a.m. on a Saturday a person called police to say her home on Collimore Road had been burglarized and she had been sexually assaulted.

At the time, the suspect was described as a teenager, black or Hispanic male, with dark hair, possibly wearing brown shorts and a maroon shirt. He stole a registered .38 caliber Smith and Wesson handgun from the victim’s home.

After an investigation by East Hartford Police, a warrant was signed and served on September 23 at Juvenile Court for the September 19 assault. The suspect, who we now know was Bellamy, was held at Hartford Juvenile Detention.

The next day State Police reported that the 16-year-old, who they didn’t name at the time, was also being charged by the Central District Major Crimes Unit for the September 3 assault. Because it was in the commuter lot, the case was taken over by State Police instead of East Hartford Police.

Both police departments identified Bellamy as a suspect, and obtained a DNA sample from him. His DNA was provided to the forensic science laboratory, and it was confirmed that the male suspect DNA profile was a match with evidence seized during the state police investigation.

For the first assault, Bellamy was charged with attempt to commit murder during the act of committing a felony, strangulation, first-degree aggravated sexual assault, first-degree kidnapping, carjacking, assault, reckless endangerment, larceny and robbery.

For the second assault, Bellamy was charged with attempt to commit murder, first-degree sexual assault, strangulation, stealing a gun, home invasion, assault in the first degree, unlawful restraint and larceny.

Bond was set at $1.5 million, and he remains in custody. He is next due in court October 6.
