Police identify victim in fatal Durham crash

DURHAM — One person died after a rollover crash early Tuesday morning.

Police were called to 834 New Haven Rd. near the North Branford and Durham town line for a one car crash shortly after midnight.

According to police, the driver, Robert Southwick, 42, of Middletown, was killed in the accident.

The investigation revealed that the Chevy Avalanche was driving north on Route 17, near Coe Road, when it crossed over the southbound lane and left the road. The car hit the embankment, an then rolled over, hitting a tree. The car then came back on the road and landed on its roof, and then slid across the road and hit the medal guardrail on the opposite side of the road.

The road was closed but has since reopened.
