MIDDLETOWN — Connecticut State Police are driving around with purple magnetic ribbons on their cruisers to raise awareness about domestic violence.

The ribbons will be on all marked cruisers this month, which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The magnets say “CSP Cares” and list a national domestic violence hot line number, 800-799-SAFE.

Troopers responded to nearly 1,400 domestic violence calls in the fiscal year that ended June 30. State police say that in more than half those calls, an intimate partner was determined to be at a heightened risk of harm. Most victims called a domestic violence hot line, after troopers gave them information about it.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said in a statement that police across the state continue to work to improve their response to domestic violence.
