SHELTON--In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, The Umbrella Center for Domestic Violence Services hosted a domestic violence vigil on the Huntington Green in Shelton on Tuesday night.

The vigil recognized 17 people killed by acts of domestic violence in Connecticut this year, including Lisa Infante, whose husband is accused of killing her on September 27.

Domestic violence survivors spoke in front of a crowd of community members and police officers, sharing their stories of survival.

"He punched me in the face in front of a teacher," recalled one young domestic violence survivor named Rebecca. "He still tries to threaten me today."

"If I didn't make the perfect dinner, it got thrown at me -- hot, cold or indifferent," said Judy, another domestic violence survivor.

Other survivors and their children painted t-shirts with messages of strength, which were on display at the vigil.

Umbrella's director, Susan DeLeon, said many of those who are killed in acts of domestic violence never reached out for help. Those who do ask for help may not realize the magnitude of their situations.

"They'll tell us their story and the first thing they'll say is, 'Am I a victim? Is that domestic violence?'" said DeLeon.

Umbrella provides counseling services, a 24-hour crisis hotline and safe houses. The group has also forged close relationships with several local police departments.

"This isn't a police problem," said Ansonia Police Chief Kevin Hale, who was the keynote speaker at the vigil. "It's not an Umbrella problem. This is a problem we all have to address. This is everyone's problem."

All services provided by The Umbrella Center for Domestic Violence Services remain confidential. For the center's 24-hour crisis hotline, call 203-736-9944 or toll-free 1-888-774-2900.
