NEW HAVEN — A jury has deadlocked on a murder charge faced by a New Haven man authorities allege shot two teenage brothers in 2014, killing one of them.

A jury on Monday found Jeffrey Covington guilty of a weapons charge in connection with the 2014 slaying of 17-year-old Taijhon Washington, but deadlocked on murder and first-degree assault charges, prompting a judge to declare a mistrial.

Authorities say the 20-year-old Covington killed Taijhon Washington and injured his 16-year-old brother Travon Washington. Police say there had been a feud between Covington and the Washingtons.

Prosecutors said they plan a new trial on the murder and assault charges.

The New Haven Register  reports that Covington’s lawyer said “the wrong person was on trial,” and his client looks forward to his next court date.
