MIDDLETOWN–“A controversial op-ed costs Wesleyan campus newspaper its funding” would be the wrong headline, according to a student leader.
Alex Garcia said reports that a Sunday vote in student government to cut funding for the Wesleyan Argus from $30,000 to $13,000 are not accurate.
Garcia said instead a resolution, which he authored, passed to study the amount of circulation the campus paper gets and the possibility of printing reductions to free up money.
The resolution’s vote came on the heels of an op-ed printed in the Argus last month which questioned the Black Lives Matter movement. That led to a petition on campus to defund the paper.
“The student government is not in favor of retaliatory funding cuts, and we strongly believe in freedom of press,” Garcia said.
Garcia went on to say that any budget decision, including what money would be allocated for the Argus, wouldn’t be made until next year.
