HARTFORD — A judge is reopening the Hartford zoning dispute case that involved eleven people sharing a mansion on Scarborough St.
This is only two weeks after the same judge dismissed the groups case. The group is dubbed as the Scarborough 11 and the eight plaintiffs co-own a mansion and live there with three children. The city ordered some residents who are not legally related to leave the home in October 2014, saying the group was violating zoning laws.
Hartford zoning laws keep a limit on the number of unrelated residents that can live in a single family homes. In the lawsuit filed against the city, it claimed their constitutional rights were being violated. A judge dismissed it on Oct. 14 after finding the group did not exhaust all their local options to resolve the dispute before challenging in federal court.
The plaintiffs or those who co-own and live in the mansion are happy their case is reopened. They’ll continue to fight their battle to live together on Scarborough St. The group originally came together with $435,000 in 2014 to buy the house and argued the city was interfering with their constitutional rights.
The Hartford Courant reports the group at an appeal hearing last week explained why they thought they would have been denied a variance.
