BRIDGEPORT — A Bridgeport man charged with killing a popular city store owner has had his request for a new court-appointed lawyer denied.

Treizy Lopez told a judge on Wednesday that his attorney was not properly representing him, and told him he could get 100 years in prison.

The Connecticut Post reports that the judge denied the 19-year-old Lopez’s request for a new lawyer, saying a defense attorney’s job is not to “sugar coat” the process, and telling a client the sentence he could face is part of the job.

Lopez is one of two men charged in the shooting death of Jose Salgado in April. The 57-year-old Salgado was shot inside Sapaio’s Grocery during a robbery as his wife watched.
