MONROE – A statue of Jesus was stolen from a Monroe store that sells religious items and artifacts.

The five-foot tall statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, valued at $600, was stolen from the decorative rose garden area in front of Angels & Company on Main Street sometime Tuesday after 6:45 p.m. It was noticed to be missing at around 9:30 Wednesday morning.

The statue was donated months ago by a woman who had to give up her home and go to an assisted living facility.

The store owners, Midge Saglimbene and Linda Schirrillo,  were alerted to the theft when a friend called them after store hours. They were upset and filed a report with police.

The owners think it was a prank but they want to believe there’s a possibility someone out there needs it more than they do.

“We’re not here to make a lot of money,” said one of the owners. “We just want to help people. Someone must have needed it more than we did.  If they needed help, they could have just come to us.”

The Monroe Police Department is asking anyone who may have seen anything suspicious near the store during this time or has any information of regarding this theft, to contact the department at 203-261-3622 or call the tip-line at 203-452-2839.
