NEW HAVEN — Police in the East Rock section of the city are taking a tough love approach to keeping resident’s valuables safe.

The New Haven Register reports that officers walking the beat will take items from unlocked vehicles and store them for safe-keeping at police headquarters. Police said residents have failed to heed warnings about leaving items of value in unlocked cars and are finding them stolen.

Removing property that presents an invitation to thieves is an exception to laws covering search and seizures.
