NEW BRITAIN — Police have found a suspect they were looking for who they believe sexually assaulted a woman in downtown New Britain last month.

Police said on October 21 around 7:25 p.m., a woman was in the downtown area when she was sexually assaulted.

Police obtained video surveillance footage from several nearby businesses which showed the suspect, who police said appeared to be a younger male with a goatee and short dark hair with a receding hair-line. He appeared to be between 5-foot-7 and 5-foot-10 with a skinny build and was wearing a light-colored coat over a hooded sweatshirt, baggy, dark-colored pants and what appeared to be hiking type sneakers.

Police said he was also pushing a mountain bike with rear pegs.

The public helped identify him as Joel St. Peter, 24, of New Britain.

St. Peter was arrested on Friday and charged with sexual assault in the first degree and kidnapping in the first degree. He is being held on $400,000 bond.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Kevin Artruc at 860-826-3149.
