FAIRFIELD — One person is in custody after an overnight carjacking where police used the signal from the victim’s phone to track the car’s whereabouts.
Police said a carjacking occurred in Hamden around 2:30 a.m. Monday when the car was stolen from Fairview Avenue, in the vicinity of Second Street. Hamden Police said a woman and her boyfriend and were pulled out of the vehicle by two suspects. The woman’s foot was run over as the vehicle took off.
Police tracked the car using the woman’s cell phone, which was left inside of the vehicle. The phone was tracked to a rest area, on Route 15 in Orange. Hamden Police notified the Connecticut State Police where the vehicle was located.
State Police troopers spotted the vehicle near Exit 48 on Route 15. The suspects led police on a chase south on Route 15 south at speeds up to 95 mph for over two miles to Exit 46 where the vehicle crashed.
The two suspects involved ran away from the stolen vehicle. Police searched the area and one of the suspects was taken into custody.
Jaron Jenkins, 22, of New York, was arrested for reckless driving, larceny, interfering with an officer and reckless endangerment. He was taken to the hospital for minor injuries. He is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
