STRATFORD— A man accused of harassing the family of a Sandy Hook shooting victim is asking to be placed in a pretrial probation program for nonviolent offenders.

Matthew Mills has claimed the 2012 shooting that killed 20 first-graders and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown never happened.

The 32-year-old New York City man appeared Tuesday in Bridgeport Superior Court. He was charged with breach of peace and interfering with police in Stratford Nov. 7 after approaching the family of Victoria Soto, a first-grade teacher who was killed in the shooting.

Mills was arrested during an annual road race and scholarship fundraiser named for Soto.

A judge ordered him to stay away from Soto’s family and set a hearing for next month on the bid for pretrial probation.
