Several towns around the state are reporting IRS scamming incidents.

Coventry Police say they've received multiple phone calls from residents who got calls from people claiming to be the IRS. The callers would leave messages and call multiple times in an attempt to get personal information.

The callers claimed that while doing a tax audit they found the person underpaid and owed money. Residents were threatened by the callers, who said they would come to their homes to collect the money or file lawsuits. Some of the calls are originating from Texas area codes.

Also, a Bristol resident told FOX 61 that he got a voicemail saying "IRS is filing a lawsuit against you to get more information about this case file. Please call immediately." The phone number had a Washington state area code.

Meanwhile, police departments in East Haven, Waterford and Middletown posted warnings on their Facebook pages about multiple residents getting IRS scam calls.

Middletown also wanted to remind residents that IRS would send you a print letter asking you to call them, they wouldn't call you.

Plainfield and Torrington have also reported issues.

East Haven posted some tips from the IRS on its Facebook page on how to avoid scams. The most important thing is to never provide information to someone calling you and claiming to be the IRS. If you think you might owe taxes, hang up and call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040. If you know that you don't owe taxes, call 1-800-366-4484.

If you think someone is scamming you, hang up and call your local police department, and then fill out a complaint on the FTC's website by clicking here.
