NEW HAVEN – Just before 11 p.m. on Tuesday night, police responded to the area of Davenport Avenue and Elliot Street for a report of a bloodied man found lying in the road.

Dennis White, 37, who has addresses in Bridgeport and New Haven, had suffered many injuries, including a fractured skull, and was taken to Yale–New Haven Hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

Crash investigators found no evidence at the scene that suggested White was hit by a car at that location but doctors who examined him noted his injuries suggested he was likely struck and then dragged by a vehicle.

There were no calls were made to authorities reporting a crash and no witnesses were found. None of the familiar crash-related evidence was found, either.

“The mystery facing investigators is how did this man get to Davenport Avenue and Elliot Street?” asked New Haven PIO David Hartman in a bulletin. “Where was the initial scene and who’s responsible?”

Anyone who has information that could be helpful to investigators is urged to phone police at 203-946-6304.
