Prisoner killed after altercation at Enfield Correctional Institution

ENFIELD –  A  prisoner is dead after some type of altercation with another prisoner.

At 3:11 p.m. on Friday, staff at the Enfield Correctional Institution responded to a nonresponsive inmate. He was given emergency care and taken to the hospital, but he died at 4:02 p.m.

The man was identified as Charles Gattert, 53, of Prospect. He was serving a six-year sentence for risk of injury to a minor, and had been imprisoned since September 26, 2012.

The State Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the manner and cause of death, and police have not released information on the other person involved in the fight.
