HARTFORD — Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has ordered flags lowered to half-staff in Connecticut in honor of Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.

Flags will remain at half-staff until sunset on Monday.

The Dec. 7, 1941, surprise attack by Japan on the U.S. Navy base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii claimed about 2,400 American lives and pushed the United States into World War II.

Malloy said he wants to recognize the extraordinary sacrifices of all who served in Pearl Harbor nearly 75 years ago and the military members and civilians who died in the attack.

He says he also wants to thank those who served during World War II.

Flags are currently at half-staff in accordance with a presidential proclamation issued last week to honor the victims of the shooting in San Bernardino, California.

“After the devastation wrought at Pearl Harbor,” Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman said. “this country coalesced around our military men and women in a way that is distinctly American. To this day, the Greatest Generation reminds us that we are all obligated to serve in defense of our democracy and our freedoms. From honoring the sacrifices of our warriors and the families supporting them, to ensuring our Armed Forces have the training and tools they need to achieve their missions, to protecting our veterans in their civilian lives, we are united. On December 7, we honor those we lost and those who fought, and reflect on the many lessons learned when a nation came together in pursuit of liberty and justice for all.”
