MILFORD -- Police are investigating after a large swastika was spray-painted on a tree and other locations in a residential neighborhood in Milford.

Police were called shortly after 7 a.m. to the Woodland Drive neighborhood.

The symbols were spray-painted on a tree, in a crosswalk and painted on a street sign.

Town of Milford crews quickly covered up or removed the hateful imagery.

Police believe the vandals committed the crimes overnight and said they will canvass the neighborhood to see if anyone saw anything suspicious.

Officers said vandalism happens in town periodically, but rarely is it racially or religiously charged.

Sunday night was the first night of the Jewish holiday Hanukkah, and the graffiti was done some time overnight Sunday into Monday.
