CHESHIRE — A Connecticut woman has been charged with mailing drugs to her son in prison.

According to court records, 65-year-old Valerie Gambardella, of Cheshire, is free on $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on Jan. 11. She has yet to enter a plea.

The Record Journal  reports that according to police, last summer Gambardella sent four envelopes to the New Haven Correctional Center, three to her son and one to his former cellmate. Prison officials say the envelopes contained suboxone, a narcotic used to treat opioid addiction.

Gambardella told police that she sent her son three envelopes with family pictures and didn’t know there were drugs inside. She says a woman she did not know stopped by her house and dropped off the envelopes.
