TRENTON, N.J. — Former NBA player Tate George is in court facing a sentencing hearing.

The former University of Connecticut star was convicted two years ago on four counts of wire fraud in what prosecutors say was a real estate Ponzi scheme that snared other athletes and celebrities.

George has claimed the real estate ventures were legitimate and that he didn’t mislead anybody.

George has been jailed since his conviction. He appeared in court Wednesday wearing a green prison jumpsuit.

The sentencing is expected to last into Thursday.

George played for the NBA’s New Jersey Nets and Milwaukee Bucks. He’s best remembered for a buzzer-beating shot for UConn in a 1990 NCAA tournament game against Clemson.
