HARTFORD — A 39-year-old Connecticut man has been sentenced to serve 19 years in prison for shooting his girlfriend in a failed murder-suicide attempt.

The Hartford Courant reports Pedro Morales agreed to plead guilty to charges of first-degree assault and risk of injury to a child in a deal with prosecutors.

Morales shot Jennifer Rivera in the head and neck with a stolen firearm on Nov. 9, 2013, at her parents’ Bulkeley Avenue home in Hartford. His children and niece were in the house at the time.

Following the shooting, Morales fled and shot himself in the face.

Morales, through an interpreter, apologized to Rivera and said he wanted to be with her his entire life.

Rivera told the judge that her children no longer consider Morales to be their father.
