ESSEX--A major fire at a recycling plant in Essex prompted a massive response from emergency officials.

The fire was at Calamari Recycling, which is located on Dump Road, near where Route 9 and Route 154 intersect.

Several roads in the area, including a section of Rt. 154, were shut down due to the massive firefighting response, and police asked people to stay away from the area.

The recycling facility has more than 25 full-time employees.

There are a lot of combustible items at the facility, which was a cause for concern. There was also concern about having enough water to fight the fire. On that matter, Connecticut Water told FOX 61 that 650,000 gallons of water were used over a four-hour period to fight the fire. Over a 6-hour period, the fire departments used about 3,000 gallons of water per minute.

The facility that the water comes from in Cheshire is designed to provide 1,000,000 gallons of water per day.

No injuries were reported.
