HARTFORD--Police are asking for the public's help to solve an old cold case that they think someone may have answers to.

On July 10, 2002 at 1 p.m. Hartford Police responded to reports that there was a badly hurt man in an apartment at 217 Wethersfield Ave. Police say neighborhood kids found the unresponsive man, but when police arrived he was dead.

The victim, Margaro Hernandez, 72, was well-liked by his neighbors, and was known for making money by selling bootleg alcohol, loose cigarettes and candy.

He was found strangled by bed sheets and beaten.

Police say that he was known to have a lot of gold jewelry, but none of it was found in his apartment. There was also no cash around, which was strange due to his usual business.

Police said that a recent relationship that Margaro had had gone sour, and several persons of interest were identified, but no arrests have ever been made.

Since it was a warm summer day, people were likely outside in the neighborhood, and others may have been in the large apartment building and may have heard something.

Police are asking anyone who remembers any details from that day or has any information to call the department at 860-757-4463.
