SOUTHINGTON — An identity thief posing as a customer attempted to purchase two iPhone 6S Plus devices through fraudulent means, according to law enforcement officials.

Police officers responded to Simply Wireless on 750 Queen Street just before 3pm Friday after store employees alerted them to the incident.

The employee became suspicious after realizing the woman’s identification card was forged, bearing the name of an existing customer. The worker contacted law enforcement and waited for their arrival, meanwhile informing the suspect the transaction could not be authorized.

Maribel Hidalgo, 19, of the Bronx, New York, was placed under arrest and charged with Identity Theft, Credit Card Theft, Criminal Impersonation and Criminal Attempted Larceny.

In total, the iPhones were valued at $1,829.20.

The suspect was held on a $50,000 bond and appeared in court later in the day.
