WATERFORD–State Sen. Andrew Maynard was involved in a car crash on Thursday afternoon.

The two-car crash occurred on Rt. 32 in the Quaker Hill section of Waterford. His camp initially said it was just Maynard’s car involved, but police say Maynard’s car hit an SUV and then went down an embankment.

Maynard was treated at the scene and was taken to the hospital for further evaluation, though he was conscious.

Pietro Scelfo of Uncasville told The Day that his wife saw Maynard in her rearview mirror approaching rapidly and swerving just before striking her SUV.

A spokesman for state Senate Democrats says Maynard was cleared to drive after suffering a traumatic brain injury during a fall at his home in 2014.

Maynard, who is the Democratic state senator for Stonington, suffered a serious head injury in July 2014 after falling “from a significant height” onto the sidewalk in front of his Stonington home.

Some were surprised when he decided to stay in the race for re-election just months after the accident since he still had speech delays and issues with cognition, memory and walking.

He won reelection and showed up at his swearing in ceremony last January, the first time he had made a public appearance after his fall. While he continued to recover, Senate President Pro Temp Martin Looney and Sen. Cathy Osten helped represent his district.
