Police searching for driver after hit-and-run that seriously injured 2 in Hamden

HAMDEN — A busy stretch of road was shut down Thursday afternoon while police investigated a serious accident. Just before 2 p.m. a car struck two men and then took off. The men, while crossing Dixwell Avenue near Robert Street, were seriously injured, according to police.

The car’s driver stopped momentarily, before fleeing southbound on Dixwell Avenue. The driver was described as a black man, approximately 5’8”.

Police describe the car involved as an older red, or orange, 4-door, possibly a Saturn or Nissan Altima.

Dixwell Avenue was closed as part of the police investigation into the accident but has since reopened.

The car may have front end or front windshield damage.

Both victims were transported to Yale-New Hospital with serious injuries. Their names are being withheld pending the notification of family members.
