HARTFORD — A man suspected of mugging a church minister last October was captured after assaulting a deputy U.S. Marshal on Thursday.

Members of the U.S. Marshal’s Violent Fugitive Task Force first observed Rushawn Carroll, 24, in the passenger seat of a vehicle near his home on Chestnut Street, and signaled local patrol officers to follow him.

Responding units on Pliny Street witnessed the suspect’s vehicle turn east and began traveling towards them. The suspect bailed from the passenger’s side door immediately upon seeing the approaching cruiser.

Police gave chase and eventually swarmed Carroll in the area of 206 Mather Street. As a Deputy U.S. Marshal attempted to apprehend him, the suspect reportedly struck him in the face.

Hartford Police detectives assisted after witnessing the assault. They struggled to handcuff the suspect, who they say was combative during the course of the encounter. He also allegedly spit at officers’ faces several times.

Carroll was charged with Robbery 1st Degree and Conspiracy 1st Degree for his suspected role in the street robbery of a church minster last October. He was charged additionally with Interfering with Police, Assault on Police and Weapons in a Vehicle due to the latest confrontation.
