HARTFORD — Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is still trying to update Connecticut’s liquor laws.

This year, the Democrat is again proposing a bill that would eliminate so-called minimum bottle pricing. Current state law generally prohibits retailers, such as package stores, from selling certain alcoholic beverages below a minimum price.

Malloy tells The Associated Press that it’s unfair to the consumer and ultimately hurts Connecticut tax revenue collections.

He estimates Connecticut consumers are paying $4 to $12 more per bottle than surrounding states.

The Connecticut Package Stores Association is again fighting the proposal. The group warns that Malloy’s legislation could lead to 600 of the state’s approximate 1,150 liquor stores closing their doors.

The General Assembly’s General Law Committee has scheduled a public hearing on the proposal for Feb. 23.
