HARTFORD, Conn. — State government junkies in Connecticut may have an opportunity to watch more legislative hearings and courtroom debates under a proposal to create an expanded 24-hour cable TV and online public affairs network.

The legislature’s Government Administration and Elections Committee will hold a public hearing Monday on a bill that would establish the State Civic Network.

The network would expand upon the existing Connecticut Television Network, offering live transmissions and archived coverage of many more proceedings involving state government, including news conferences, election coverage and executive state agency hearings and meetings.

Funding for the network would come from a proposed charge of 40 cents per month to the state’s approximately one million cable subscribers. The Connecticut Television Network receives about $3.2 million annually from the gross receipts tax on cable TV.
