PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A Connecticut man has pleaded guilty to traveling to Rhode Island to have sex with a minor.

U.S. Attorney Peter Neronha announced Tuesday that 36-year-old Joshua Robinson, of Colchester, Connecticut, pleaded guilty in February in U.S. District Court in Providence to interstate travel to engage in illicit sexual conduct.

Prosecutors say Robinson exchanged sexually explicit emails beginning in August 2015 with a person he believed was a 14-year-old girl in Rhode Island. The person was actually members of the Rhode Island State Police.

Robinson arranged to meet the teenager with the intention of having sexual intercourse.

He was arrested Sept. 4 in Cranston after arriving at a location where he’d arranged to meet the teenager.

Robinson was sentenced on Thursday to 46 months in federal prison, followed by 10 years supervised release. He faced up to 30 years in federal prison.
